Orca supports execution under emulation. In emulation mode, the system will not attempt to contact inventory or leased resources but all other code will be executed as usual. Emulation mode can be used to run long experiments at a faster rate by avoiding the actual configuration of leased resources. Please consult the Container XML Configuration Guide for information about configuring the system's internal clock.
If you are interested about real mode execution, please consult the Real Mode Execution Guide .
Execution under emulation is controlled by a property in the container properties file . Open container.properties and look for the emulation property (emulation). When the property is set to 'true', the system will execute under emulation. When the property is set to 'false', the system will execute using real resources.
Note: You cannot toggle the emulation flag for an already running system. Your changes will take place the next time you restart Orca.
Even when executing under emulation, the container database must still contain records about the inventory the system should manage. Inventory records in this case do not need to describe real resources and can have arbitrary IP addresses and memory sizes. This is particularly useful if an experiment requires machines with huge amounts of memory.
Orca ships with sample inventory that can be used for emulation purposes. You can find more information about this here .
The behavior of the system under emulation is generally dependent on the configuration handlers being used. Orca ships with several configuration handlers for service managers and site authorities explicitly designed for emulation purposes. You can find a list of these handlers here . If you are using a different handler under emulation, consult the handler's documentation to determine if the handler supports execution under emulation.
In general, command-line execution under emulation does not require that the system be configured with information about available images. However, running the web portal under emulation requires that the system contain information about at least one image.
Please consult the Images Guide for more information about image management.
