Real Mode Execution Guide

Under real mode, Orca can be used to manage a collection of inventory by creating/destroying/modifying physical and virtual machines. Orca also supports execution under emulation. For information about emulation, please consult the Emulation Guide .

Enable/Disable Real Mode

Real mode execution is controller by a property in the container properties file . Open container.properties and look for the emulation property (emulation). When the property is set to 'true', the system will execute under emulation. When the property is set to 'false', the system will execute in real mode.

Note: You cannot toggle the emulation flag for an already running system. Your changes will take place the next time you restart Orca.

Inventory

Execution under emulation requires that the container database contain records ONLY about valid inventory machines/storage servers. Please do not mix emulation mode inventory with real mode inventory, as this may cause some confising errors.

Real mode inventory records should contain real IP addresses. Any resource pools created under real mode, should specify resource dimensions that are actually present on all inventory in the resource pool. For example, a resource pool that specifies VMMs with 1GB of RAM should only contains VMMs that have at least 1GB of RAM available for new virtual machines.

For more information about resource pools consult the COD Getting Started Guide and the COD Site Plugin documentation.

The Inventory Guide contains more information about configuring and registering inventory.

Configuration Handlers

Do not use emulation-only handlers when running in real mode.

Images

Real mode execution requires that the system be configured with information about at least one virtual machine image. Please consult the Images Guide for more information about image management.
